Invitation from the Host Institution

Dear Colleagues and Friends!

The State and University Library is very pleased to invite you to the 33rd IASA Conference which will take place in Aarhus 16-19 September 2002. This year our library celebrates its 100th anniversary, and our hosting of the IASA Conference constitutes one of the most important highlights among the many celebrations.

The conference venue is Aarhus Congress House. It is situated right in the heart of Aarhus – close to hotels, the railway station, busses, and many restaurants, bars and shopping areas of all kinds and prices. Further information – also about travel, expected weather in September and other practical issues – is provided in this document.

The conference programme is set up in accordance with the guidelines of IASA. On Sunday, 15 September, the committees and sections will have the opportunity to meet in closed sessions. Also, the registration desk will be open on Sunday from 9-20, and you are kindly invited to join the welcome reception hosted by the State and University Library at the conference site on Sunday at 18.30.

The official programme will start with an opening session on Monday morning. We have set up a preliminary programme around this year’s theme: Digital asset management and preservation - a many-sided and highly relevant topic for all of us!

Don’t hesitate to contact us about any question you might have in relation to the conference, either by fax, post or e-mail.

We are looking very much forward to welcoming all of you in September!

Kind regards,

Eva Fønss-Jørgensen

Invitation from IASA

Dear IASA member,

Anniversaries are always a cause for celebration. You may remember, when we met in 1999 in Vienna, our host, the Phonogrammarchiv celebrated its 100th birthday and attracted a large number of you to come and give it three cheers. This year, the Statsbiblioteket in Aarhus is looking back on one hundred years of endeavour and achievement and is happy to host our conference and celebrate its centenary with IASA.

It was in 1902 that the State and University Library opened to the public as a general research library providing access mostly to books and newspapers. In 1987, the State Media Archive was established as part of the library with the task of collecting and preserving broadcasts from Danish radio and TV stations, and two years later this remit was extended to include Danish sound recordings. Although still relatively young in this area, they have fully understood the value of preservation and access in the digital domain.

Which brings us to the point of this conference and its general theme: Digital asset management and preservation. This theme was chosen not just because everyone is talking about digital assest management (DAM for short). The intention is also to stimulate debate by setting up DAM as a current buzzword in opposition to preservation as the most important and perennial concern of our profession. Is digitization alone really the panacea for all archival troubles, first and foremost the management of obsolete carriers and formats? Or do we need to think beyond questions of carrier longevity? Is it possible that DAM makes preservation unnecessary? These are only a few of the issues raised by DAM that will be addressed at our conference in Aarhus.

Unlike the previous conferences in Singapore 2000 and London 2001, Aarhus will be a IASA only conference, the main benefit of which will be that the conference programme will focus more strongly on matters relevant just to our association. By the way: this is an election year, and in Aarhus the old Executive Board will make way for a new one.

As this is the first time IASA has met in Denmark you may not have heard about Aarhus before. It is the second largest Danish city (after Copenhagen) and one of the oldest. It has a seaport and an airport nearby. It is an industrial and cultural centre with several educational institutions: a university, a college of technology, a music academy, a theatre, a variety of museums, and, of course, the Statsbiblioteket. This sounds very promising: there is plenty here to engage your interest. Therefore it is my pleasure to invite you to Aarhus for an interesting conference, and possibly also for a stimulating pre- or post-conference stay in delightful Denmark.

Kind regards,

Albrecht Haefner
Secretary-General, IASA
19 April 2002

Travel Information

How to get to Aarhus?

Aarhus is the perfect place to locate a conference, being situated right in the centre of Denmark. In addition to this, the railway station is in the very heart of the city, there is access to national and international flights, and, of course, regular trains and ferry links to Sealand with connections for Copenhagen.

Airports:

Aarhus Airport - www.aar.dk
The closest airport is Aarhus Airport (Tirstrup) situated 60 km north east of Aarhus with airport bus service connected to all arrivals. However, Aarhus Airport does not have many direct international flight connections, so if you go to Denmark by airplane, most probably you will first have to go to one of the two airports below.

Billund Airport - www.bll.dk
Billund Airport is situated 120 km south of Aarhus with regular airport service to Aarhus.

Copenhagen Airport - www.cph.dk
Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup) is one of Europe’s largest airports with connections from destinations all over the world. If you go to Copenhagen Airport, you can either take the train directly from the airport to Aarhus, or you can change to domestic flight to Aarhus Airport. The travel time between Copenhagen Airport and Aarhus is about 3 hours by train and 30 minutes by domestic flight +1 hour by airbus to get to the centre of Aarhus.

Tourist Information

Aarhus is a wonderful city with many exiting places to go. There are museums, parks, bars and restaurants of all kinds, and life and atmosphere is very vivid, not least because Aarhus is a university city with many students and young people. However, quiet places can always be found, if you prefer that.
